Flash on the iPhone followup
This is a folllow up to last weeks post on Open Screen and the lack of interest from Apple.
I was watching Kevin Lynch’s presentation on the goals of Adobe for future deployments of AIR and he demonstrated the desired path for Adobe. He talked about the new Open Screen alliance and the goals of a unified flash player and a unified AIR runtime deployed across the many partners and devises.
Kevin specifically mentioned that Adobe would imagine a workflow where developers would build an application for a mobile devise running within the AIR runtime and be able to deploy the same application to a pc as well. The mockup images below show the Adobe media player running on a devise and then the same application running on a Windows desktop.

Kevin also took some time to talk about the incredible penetration of the flash player on pc’s and mentioned that the newest flash player update for h.264 video has already reached a 60% distribution on pcs.
Next, he mentioned that the flash player has been distributed to 500 million phones and is now one of the most installed pieces of software on phones with a 20% market penetration.

He mentioned that the goals of Open Screen would not only include pushing the flash player and AIR runtime to as many devises as possible but also the capability of over the air updates to keep these technologies up to date.
On to the demos:
Kevin wanted to show how an application can be distributed to many different devises.
Kevin demonstrated the finetune music player running on the desktop via AIR.

Kevin next did a real time demo showing the finetune music player application running on the desktop as well as playing on a mobile phone using flash technology.

He next showed the finetune media player application running on a Nintendo Wii.

Finally, he showed a demo of a work in progress which was the finetune player running on a set top box.

He wrapped up his session by talking about the many tools and services that Adobe offers to make this all possible.
iPhone?
Although neither Kevin or the CEO Narayen who also is shown in this presentation would comment directly about the iPhone. Narayen did mention that where there’s a technology platform, they want to make sure the technology platform on all devices. Narayen also mentioned that said iPhone customers who want flash should complain to “Steve.” So the debate continues as to whether Adobe technologies will make it to the iPhone. One this is for sure, Adobe has a plan for the rest of the devise manufacturers and it is very exciting for us developers.
Overall this is a really cool presentation and I highly recommend checking it out. To watch it for yourself, click here.
